Taking a cue from a famous 1833 engraving by Adolf Vollmy that depicts a Leonid meteor shower – I’ve added a more minor meteor shower to a scene of Tree Swallows playfully flying in my back yard at sunrise. In my observations, tree swallows are equally fierce and graceful – effective aerial insectivores (although not as mighty as the dragonfly). As a new member of Frankfort, Kentucky’s chapter of the Audubon Society, I’m getting lots of inspiration and knowledge from the activities I participate in.

Queen honey bees are pretty remarkable inspiring loyalty and leadership in their hive. My grandmother brought together our family while also being remarkably talented, especially with textiles. Her home-made “Grandmother’s Garden” quilt pattern was the inspiration here.

I mark spring’s progress by the arrival of the barn swallows and revere their habits of gobbling up wasps and other insects around our home. If you’ve ever witnessed the feast of mayflies — you are lucky — the grace, fluidity, and freedom of these spunky birds has a special place in my heart. This print was originally printed with a construction steamroller at Portland Museum in Louisville, Kentucky. The edition was printed on a large Takach Press at the University of Kentucky with printing assistance from Charles VanMeter. Read about the process of making this print on my blog.

*This edition has minor wrinkles in the paper — a combination of the thinner paper (Mulberry is a very strong paper), extreme pressure needed to print and the large open areas of the block. Feel free to inquire and/or request a photo if you are concerned.
